In 1860 a large gallery was added to the chapel taking the seating capacity to over 1000, making it the largest chapel in the Ashton circuit.

In 1898 the original Sunday school building was replaced by a new building, which remains in use today.

Wellington St chapel formed part of the Methodist New Connexion, however not far away the Primitive Methodist church was also developing. The Primitive Methodists opened a chapel on Foundry St on Christmas day 1836. In 1877 a new chapel was built on the site of the former graveyard and the old chapel became the Sunday school.

In the 1960's dry rot was discovered at Foundry St and funding was difficult, it was realised their future would be in union with Wellington St to form Dukinfield Methodist church. The final services at Foundry St were held on 28th December 1969.
